Understanding Breast Cancer Screening and Risk Factors

Breast cancer is a common type of cancer that affects both men and women, but it’s most commonly found in women. According to the American Cancer Society, about 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer over their lifetime. While screening recommendations might seem complex, the overall message is simple: Talk to your doctor about your breast cancer risks, then decide on a screening schedule, and stick to it.

Men are at much lower risk of developing breast cancer than women, but they can still get it. Doctors don’t generally suggest men get screened, but if you’re taking estrogen due to hormone replacement therapy or other medical conditions, your doctor may recommend annual mammograms starting at age 40. It’s essential to discuss your personal risk for breast cancer with your doctor, especially if you have a strong family history or gene mutations.

There are many causes of armpit pain, from a mild muscle strain to more serious conditions like breast cancer. A rash on the breast can be a cause for concern. Extra fluid can build up and cause swelling when there’s a problem with your lymphatic system.

Get Screened Today!

Don’t wait until it’s too late. Schedule an annual mammogram starting at age 40 if you’re at average risk, and discuss your personal risk with your doctor.
