Prediabetes: Understanding the Risks and Taking Control

Prediabetes is a condition where your blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. It’s a serious condition that can increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes and other health problems, such as heart disease and kidney damage.

If you’re at high risk of developing prediabetes, your doctor may recommend lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, eating a healthy diet, and exercising regularly. In some cases, medication or insulin therapy may be necessary to control blood sugar levels.

But what is prediabetes? How do you know if you have it? What are the symptoms? And how can you take control of your risk factors?

Prediabetes is a condition where your body produces insulin, but your body’s cells don’t respond to it properly. This means that glucose builds up in your bloodstream, which can lead to a range of health problems.

The American Diabetes Association recommends that adults aged 45 and older be screened for prediabetes every three years if they’re overweight or obese, have a family history of diabetes, or are physically inactive.

Signs and Symptoms

Prediabetes often doesn’t cause symptoms, but some people may experience:

* Fatigue or feeling tired all the time
* Blurred vision
* Frequent urination
* Increased thirst
* Slow healing of cuts and wounds

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s essential to talk to your doctor about getting tested for prediabetes.

Risk Factors

Prediabetes can affect anyone, but some people are at higher risk due to:

* Family history of diabetes
* Obesity or being overweight
* Physical inactivity
* Age 45 and older
* Being African American, Hispanic/Latino, or American Indian

Prevention and Treatment

The good news is that prediabetes can often be prevented or reversed with lifestyle changes. These may include:

* Losing weight
* Eating a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
* Exercise regularly
* Quitting smoking
* Getting enough sleep

If you’re diagnosed with prediabetes, your doctor may recommend medication or insulin therapy to control blood sugar levels.

Get Tested and Take Control of Your Risk Factors

If you’re at high risk of developing prediabetes, talk to your doctor about getting tested. Early detection and treatment can help prevent the progression to type 2 diabetes and other health problems.
