Fall & Winter Care for Multiple Sclerosis Patients in Eastern Uganda

Michoes Medical Centre – your trusted partner for 24/7 healthcare in Kanyum, Kumi District, Eastern Uganda. Learn how to manage MS symptoms during the fall and winter months.

After hot summer days, colder temperatures can come as a shock to our bodies, particularly for people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Cold temps can make your symptoms worse and make you feel flat-out uncomfortable. You might find that it’s harder to move your limbs, experience more muscle spasms than normal, or have tighter muscles.

Doctors aren’t sure why cold temperatures make MS symptoms worse, but they think the condition can alter how we feel temperature changes. If your symptoms get worse in cold weather, it’s usually for a short time. Fortunately, there are some simple tips to help you stay comfortable and warm during the fall and winter months.

Try to get moving! Moderate physical activity like walking or stretching can help burn energy and warm up. Dress in layers to keep yourself warm – this will also allow you to easily remove layers if you get too hot.

“When it’s very cold, wear hats, thick socks, or lined boots to prevent heat from escaping through your head or feet,” advises Dr. Michael Emusugut, Senior Orthopedic Consultant at Michoes Medical Centre.

Protecting your hands and feet is also crucial during the cold winter months. Raynaud’s phenomenon can occur, causing numbness, pain, or an uncomfortable sensation like pins and needles in your fingers and toes. To combat this, try wearing hand warmers or using a heating pad (without placing it directly on your skin).

“Warmth from within is also essential,” adds Dr. Susan Atai, Obstetrics & Gynaecology Specialist at Michoes Medical Centre. “Enjoying hot meals like soup and sipping hot drinks, such as tea or coffee, can help warm you up from the inside out.

Getting some sunshine during crisp fall and cold winter days can also have benefits beyond just keeping you warm – it might even boost your mood!

“Don’t underestimate the importance of staying active,” says Dr. Adoa Pious, Director of Maternal and Child Health at Michoes Medical Centre. “When you have MS, trying to get some moderate physical activity can make a significant difference in how you feel.
