Controla tu diabetes con estos 10 consejos sencillos

¿Estás tratando de controlar tu diabetes? ¿Sabes que es importante realizar un seguimiento de tus niveles de azúcar en la sangre? Pero ¿cómo manejas un pico que aparece después de comer? A esto se le llama glucosa en sangre ‘posprandial’ y, si tomas algunas medidas sencillas, puedes controlarla y ayudar a evitar problemas de salud.

Cuando tu nivel de azúcar en la sangre es alto, puedes tener síntomas como una sensación de confusión que te dificulta concentrarte o pensar con claridad. Tu energía también puede hundirse y puedes sentirte nervioso o de mal humor. Si tus niveles bajan demasiado, incluso podrás desmayarte.

A largo plazo, si tu nivel de azúcar en sangre se mantiene alto, podrás correr riesgo de sufrir enfermedades cardíacas, accidentes cerebrovasculares (derrames cerebrales), enfermedad renal u otros problemas. La Asociación Estadounidense de Diabetes (ADA, por su sigla en inglés) recomienda medir tus niveles de azúcar en sangre justo antes de la hora de comer con una muestra de sangre extraída de un pinchazo en el dedo.

Luego hazlo nuevamente 1 a 2 horas después del primer bocado de comida. Continúa así durante aproximadamente una semana. Anota la hora y la cantidad (número) de azúcar en sangre. Toma nota de cualquier cosa que creas que pueda afectar tus niveles, como medicamentos o ejercicio.

Y no olvides registrar exactamente lo que comiste, junto con el tamaño de las porciones y la cantidad de carbohidratos. ¿Cuál es demasiado alto después de una comida? Los expertos no están de acuerdo sobre cuál debería ser el número, pero la ADA dice que un nivel general de azúcar en sangre debe ser inferior a 180 mg/dL, 1 a 2 horas después de una comida.

Habla con tu médico sobre cuál es el nivel adecuado en tu caso y no ajustes tu medicamento sin consultar primero con tu médico. Obtén medicamentos que funcionen para ti. El programa adecuado de insulina o medicación puede marcar una gran diferencia.

Mantén el nivel de azúcar en sangre bajo control antes de las comidas. De esa manera, incluso si aumenta después de comer, no será tan dramático. Cuida lo que comes. Limita los dulces, el pan blanco, el arroz, la pasta y las papas ya que suelen provocar picos después de las comidas.

El tipo de grasa que consumes también puede influir. Un estudio muestra que es posible frenar los picos de azúcar en la sangre después de comer si se omiten los alimentos con mucha mantequilla y se elige en su lugar una comida hecha con un poco de aceite de oliva.

Desayuna todas las mañanas. Incluso cuando tengas prisa por salir, no caigas en la tentación de no desayunar. Un estudio muestra que las personas con diabetes que no desayunan presentan picos de azúcar en sangre más altos después del almuerzo y la cena.

Sal a dar un paseo después de cenar. Es un hábito saludable para todos, pero si tienes diabetes, también es una buena manera de quemar el exceso de glucosa de una comida.
