# Chickenpox: What You Need to Know

**What is chickenpox?**
Chickenpox, also known as varicella, is a highly contagious illness caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It’s most common in children and can lead to complications if not treated properly.

## Symptoms of Chickenpox
The symptoms of chickenpox include:
– A red, itchy rash that appears on the skin
– Fever
– Headache
– Fatigue
– Swollen lymph nodes

**How Long Does Chickenpox Last?**
Chickenpox symptoms usually last about 4-7 days. During this time, you may experience itching, pain, and discomfort.

## Treatment for Chickenpox
There is no specific treatment for chickenpox, but antiviral medications can help reduce the severity of symptoms. Over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen (Tylenol) can also provide relief from fever, headache, and body aches.

## Prevention of Chickenpox
The best way to prevent the spread of the virus is to get vaccinated against chickenpox. Children who haven’t had chickenpox should receive two doses of the vaccine at 12-15 months and 4-6 years old. Adults over 13 years old can also receive the vaccine.

## Complications from Chickenpox
While rare, complications from chickenpox can include bacterial skin infections, pneumonia, and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain).

**What to Do If You Have Chickenpox**
If you have chickenpox, stay home to avoid spreading the virus. Wash your hands frequently, keep cool with a wet cloth, and drink plenty of fluids to help your body recover.

**Consult a Doctor Immediately If You Experience:**
– Difficulty breathing
– Chest pain or pressure
– Severe headache or stiff neck
– Fever over 103°F (39.4°C)
– Vomiting

Don’t scratch the rash as it can lead to bacterial skin infections and scarring.
