Welcome to Michoes Medical Centre

Michoes Medical Centre opened its doors in 2022 with a simple but profound mission: to bring high-quality, compassionate healthcare to the people of Kanyum, Kumi District, and the wider Eastern Uganda region. What began as a small clinic has grown into a full-service hospital offering orthopaedics, general surgery, internal medicine, paediatrics, maternity, outpatient services, laboratory diagnostics, pharmacy, and rehabilitation.

But numbers and services only tell part of the story. At Michoes, we believe that healthcare is not just about treating diseases – it is about healing people. It is about the mother who delivers her baby safely in our maternity ward. It is about the farmer who returns to his fields after a successful fracture surgery. It is about the child who receives life-saving immunisations. It is about the elderly patient who finds comfort and dignity in our medical ward.

We are a hospital rooted in community, guided by evidence, and driven by compassion. Every decision we make – from the design of our waiting areas to the training of our staff – is made with one question in mind: What is best for the patient?

Our Pillars of Healing

Patient-first approach

From arrival to discharge, your comfort guides every decision. We listen before we treat. We explain before we prescribe. We respect your values, your culture, and your preferences.

  • Personalised care plans – No two patients are the same. We tailor treatment to your unique needs.
  • Transparent communication – You will always know what is happening and why.
  • Respect for your time – Minimising wait times and streamlining appointments.
  • Patient feedback loop – Your suggestions shape how we improve.

Evidence-based medicine

Modern protocols, experienced consultants, and digital records ensure you receive care that is proven to work.

  • Current clinical guidelines – Our protocols follow national and international standards.
  • Experienced consultants – Specialists trained at leading institutions.
  • Electronic medical records – Secure, accessible, and coordinated across departments.
  • Continuous quality improvement – We audit our outcomes and adjust accordingly.
  • Patient safety first – Infection control, medication safety, and fall prevention are priorities.

Healing environment

Calm gardens, soft light, and spaces that feel like home. We believe the physical environment affects recovery.

  • Natural light throughout – All patient areas have windows to the outside.
  • Healing garden – A quiet outdoor space for reflection and fresh air.
  • Soothing colours and artwork – Reducing anxiety and promoting calm.
  • Clean, well-maintained facilities – Regular deep cleaning and infection control.
  • Comfortable family areas – Space for loved ones to rest.

Community rooted

Serving Kumi District with outreach, education, and trust. We are not just a hospital in the community – we are part of the community.

  • Local hiring – Over 90% of our staff come from Eastern Uganda.
  • Outreach clinics – Taking services to remote villages.
  • Health education – Schools, churches, and community gatherings.
  • Sponsorship programs – Supporting vulnerable patients and aspiring healthcare workers.
  • Partnerships – Working with district health teams and NGOs.

Our Story – The Founding of Michoes Medical Centre

Michoes Medical Centre was founded by Dr. Michael Emusugut, a senior orthopaedic consultant who saw a critical gap in healthcare delivery in Eastern Uganda. For years, patients with fractures, joint problems, and surgical emergencies had to travel long distances to Mbale or even Kampala for care – journeys that were expensive, time-consuming, and sometimes impossible for poor families.

Dr. Emusugut, who trained at Makerere University and the University of Cape Town, envisioned a different future: a hospital in Kumi District where patients could receive advanced orthopaedic and surgical care close to home. He gathered a team of like-minded professionals – nurses, clinical officers, administrators, and support staff – who shared his vision.

In 2022, that vision became reality. Michoes Medical Centre opened its doors with a small inpatient ward, an outpatient clinic, a basic laboratory, and a pharmacy. The first year was challenging – there were equipment shortages, staffing gaps, and the ever-present need for funding. But the community embraced the hospital. Patients came. Trust grew. Outcomes improved.

By 2023, Michoes had expanded its surgical capacity, added a second operating theatre, and recruited additional specialists. By 2024, we had established a dedicated physiotherapy unit, upgraded our laboratory, and launched outreach clinics in Soroti West. Today, in 2026, Michoes Medical Centre is a recognised healthcare provider in Kumi District, serving thousands of patients annually.

But we are not finished. Our journey continues. We are planning a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), expanding our imaging services, and deepening our community programs. Every step forward is a step toward better health for the people we serve.

Care That Revolves Around You

From arrival to discharge – what to expect

Arrival: When you first come to Michoes Medical Centre, you will be greeted by our reception team. They will register your details, answer your questions, and guide you to the right department. If you have an emergency, you will be triaged immediately.

Consultation: You will meet with a doctor, clinical officer, or specialist who will listen to your concerns, examine you, and explain your condition. We take time to answer your questions. No rush. No jargon.

Investigations: If you need tests – blood work, X-rays, ultrasound – our laboratory and imaging team will perform them efficiently. Most results are available within hours.

Treatment: Depending on your condition, treatment may include medication, physiotherapy, minor procedures, or admission to our inpatient wards. For surgical cases, we will explain the procedure, answer your questions, and prepare you thoroughly.

Follow-up: Before you leave, we will schedule any necessary follow-up appointments. We will give you clear instructions about medications, wound care, or rehabilitation exercises. You can always call us if you have questions later.

Billing and payment: Our accounts team will provide a clear, itemised bill. We accept cash, mobile money, and selected insurance schemes. For patients facing financial hardship, our social worker can discuss sponsorship options.

What we treat: Fractures (broken bones), dislocations, sports injuries, arthritis, back pain, knee and hip problems, work-related injuries, and congenital orthopaedic conditions.

Patient Stories – Real Lives, Real Healing

Achieng’s story – Safe delivery against the odds

Achieng, a 24-year-old mother from a village outside Kanyum, arrived at Michoes in labour. She had walked 5 kilometres. Her labour was prolonged – the baby was not descending. Our midwives identified obstructed labour and called Dr. Atai. Within 30 minutes, Achieng was in the operating theatre for an emergency caesarean section. Both mother and baby survived. Today, Achieng’s baby is healthy, and she is an advocate for facility delivery in her village.

James’s story – Returning to work after a fracture

James, a 45-year-old farmer, fell from a mango tree and broke his leg. He was brought to Michoes by boda boda. X-ray showed a complex tibial fracture. Dr. Emusugut performed open reduction and internal fixation (plates and screws). James spent 10 days in our orthopaedic unit, with daily physiotherapy. He was discharged on crutches. Four months later, he walked without a limp. Six months later, he returned to farming.

Little Grace – From severe malnutrition to healthy toddler

Grace, age 18 months, was brought to Michoes by her grandmother. She was listless, with swollen feet and thinning hair – signs of severe acute malnutrition. Our paediatric team admitted her, started therapeutic feeding (ready-to-use therapeutic food), treated her underlying infections, and educated the grandmother on nutrition. Within 4 weeks, Grace gained weight and became active. She continues to attend our well-child clinic.

Peter – Managing diabetes well

Peter, age 60, was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at Michoes. He had symptoms for years but never knew the cause. Our medical officer started him on metformin, gave dietary advice, and scheduled regular follow-up. Today, Peter’s blood sugar is controlled. He has lost weight, feels more energetic, and has avoided complications. He says Michoes gave him his life back.
