Surgical Services in Kumi, Soroti & Eastern Uganda – Michoes Medical Centre

When surgery is needed, you deserve skilled, compassionate care close to home. At Michoes Medical Centre in Kanyum, Kumi District, we provide a range of surgical services for patients across Eastern Uganda—including Soroti, Bukedea, Ngora, Katakwi, Amuria, Kaberamaido, Pallisa, Tororo, Mbale, and Jinja. Led by Mr. Nicholas Iyamitai, our Head of Surgery, we offer emergency surgeries, minor procedures, wound care, and surgical consultations. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for surgical emergencies.

Why Choose Michoes for Surgical Care in Eastern Uganda?

Before Michoes, patients in Kumi and surrounding districts often travelled to Mbale or Kampala for surgery. Now, expert surgical care is available right here in Kanyum:

  • Experienced Surgeon on site: Mr. Nicholas Iyamitai, Head of Surgery, trained in emergency laparotomies, soft tissue reconstruction, and surgical mentorship. He has over 15 years of experience in Eastern Uganda.
  • 24/7 Emergency Surgery: Open day and night for acute abdomen, trauma, abscesses, and other surgical emergencies.
  • Operating Theatre: Equipped for minor and intermediate surgeries. We perform procedures under local or general anaesthesia with safe protocols.
  • On-site Laboratory: Okello John Bosco provides pre-operative blood tests (haemoglobin, grouping, cross-match, infection screens).
  • On-site Pharmacy: Jonathan A. supplies post-operative antibiotics, pain medications, and wound care supplies.
  • Anaesthesia Services: We provide safe anaesthesia with monitoring. For complex cases requiring specialist anaesthetists, we coordinate referrals.
  • Post-operative Care: We monitor patients in our recovery area and provide wound care, pain management, and follow-up.
  • Affordable, Transparent Fees: Surgery costs a fraction of what you would pay in Kampala or Mbale.

Call to Action: For any surgical concern—abdominal pain, lumps, wounds, or accidents—call +256701364362 or come to Michoes Medical Centre. We assess you immediately.

Surgical Services We Offer

Emergency General Surgery – 24/7

Mr. Nicholas Iyamitai leads emergency surgical care for life-threatening conditions:

  • Acute appendicitis: Severe right lower abdominal pain, fever, vomiting. We perform appendicectomy (removal of appendix) usually within hours of diagnosis.
  • Strangulated hernia: A lump in the groin or abdomen that becomes painful, firm, and cannot be pushed back. Emergency surgery to prevent bowel death.
  • Bowel obstruction: Severe abdominal pain, vomiting, constipation, distended abdomen. We identify the cause (adhesions, hernia, volvulus) and operate to relieve the blockage.
  • Perforated viscus: Hole in stomach, small bowel, or large bowel causing peritonitis (severe abdominal pain, rigid abdomen, fever). Emergency laparotomy to close the perforation and wash the abdomen.
  • Acute cholecystitis: Gallbladder inflammation. We remove the gallbladder (cholecystectomy) when indicated.
  • Trauma laparotomy: For internal bleeding or organ injury after road traffic accidents, falls, or stabbings. We explore the abdomen, control bleeding, and repair damaged organs.
  • Abscess drainage: Large pus collections from appendicitis, diverticulitis, or post-operative infections. We drain under local or general anaesthesia.

Emergency Call to Action: Severe abdominal pain, vomiting, inability to pass stool or gas, abdominal distension, or previous surgery with new pain? Call +256701364362 NOW. Come immediately. Do not eat or drink. We will assess for emergency surgery.

Elective General Surgery

For planned procedures, we schedule at your convenience:

  • Inguinal hernia repair: For reducible hernias in adults and children (with paediatric consultation). We use open tension-free mesh repair for most cases.
  • Umbilical hernia repair: Common in women after pregnancy. We repair with or without mesh.
  • Hydrocele repair: Swelling in the scrotum. We remove the fluid sac (hydrocelectomy).
  • Lipoma and sebaceous cyst removal: Benign lumps under the skin. We remove them in clinic under local anaesthesia.
  • Circumcision: For medical reasons (phimosis, recurrent balanitis) or cultural preference. We perform sterile circumcision with local anaesthesia.
  • Anal conditions: Haemorrhoid banding or excision, anal fissure surgery, fistula-in-ano repair (simple cases).
  • Breast lump biopsy or excision: For solid lumps or cysts. We send tissue for histology (separate fee).
  • Thyroid surgery: For large goitres suspicious for malignancy or causing compressive symptoms (limited cases; we may refer complex ones).

Call to Action: Need hernia repair, lump removal, or circumcision? Call +256701364362 to schedule a surgical consultation with Mr. Nicholas Iyamitai.

Frequently Asked Questions About Surgical Services in Kumi and Soroti

Do I need to travel to Kampala for hernia surgery?

No. Mr. Nicholas Iyamitai performs safe, effective hernia repair at Michoes for a fraction of the cost. Most patients go home within 2 days.

How long does recovery take after appendicectomy?

Open appendicectomy: 2-4 weeks before returning to heavy work or farming. Laparoscopic (if available elsewhere) is faster. We give clear return-to-activity instructions.

What anaesthesia do you use?

For minor procedures: local anaesthesia (you are awake, area numbed). For larger procedures: general anaesthesia with airway support and monitoring, administered by trained staff. We do not have a specialist anaesthetist on site every day but we coordinate with visiting anaesthetists for complex cases.

Can I stay overnight after surgery?

Yes. We have post-operative observation beds. Most major surgeries (appendicectomy, hernia repair, caesarean section) include 2-3 days of inpatient stay.

Do you do keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery?

Not routinely. We perform open surgery for most general surgical procedures. For conditions requiring laparoscopy, we refer to Mbale or Kampala.

What happens if I need blood transfusion during surgery?

We cross-match blood pre-operatively when needed. If transfusion is required, we arrange from regional blood banks. Family donation is also possible with proper screening.
