Pharmacy and Medication Guide – Kumi, Soroti & Eastern Uganda

Pharmacy and Medication Guide – Kumi, Soroti & Eastern Uganda

At Michoes Medical Centre in Kanyum, Jonathan A. (Lead Pharmacist) leads our pharmacy services. We provide safe, affordable, genuine medications for patients from Kumi, Soroti, Bukedea, Ngora, Katakwi, Amuria, Kaberamaido, Pallisa, Tororo, Mbale, and Jinja. Our pharmacy is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – including public holidays and overnight. We stock essential medicines from the Uganda National Drug Authority approved sources. Jonathan ensures safe dispensing, drug interactions screening, and pharmaceutical counseling for every patient. Never buy medications from unlicensed shops or street vendors – counterfeit and expired drugs kill.

Prescription Medications

We fill prescriptions written by Michoes doctors or from other licensed prescribers. Medication categories available: antibiotics (amoxicillin, azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, ceftriaxone, metronidazole, doxycycline); antimalarials (artemether-lumefantrine, injectable artesunate); pain relievers (paracetamol, ibuprofen, diclofenac, tramadol); diabetes medications (metformin, glibenclamide, insulin); hypertension medications (amlodipine, losartan, lisinopril, hydrochlorothiazide); asthma medications (salbutamol, beclomethasone, prednisolone); mental health medications (fluoxetine, sertraline, amitriptyline, diazepam); family planning (contraceptive pills, Depo-Provera, emergency contraception); HIV medications (tenofovir, lamivudine, dolutegravir); tuberculosis medications (rifampicin, isoniazid, ethambutol, pyrazinamide).

Call to Action: Need a prescription filled? Come to Michoes Pharmacy. Open 24/7. Call +256701364362.

Over-the-Counter Medications

You can buy these without a prescription but Jonathan still counsels you: pain and fever (paracetamol, ibuprofen); cold and allergy (cetirizine, loratadine, chlorpheniramine); cough and sore throat (cough syrup, lozenges); digestive problems (antacids, omeprazole, loperamide, senna); skin problems (hydrocortisone cream, clotrimazole cream, calamine lotion); vitamins (multivitamins, folic acid, vitamin B complex, vitamin C, calcium, iron); wound care (bandages, gauze, antiseptics).

Call to Action: Need paracetamol or bandages? Visit Michoes Pharmacy. Call +256701364362.

Antibiotics: Use Them Wisely

Antibiotics kill bacteria – not viruses (colds, flu, most sore throats). Misuse causes antimicrobial resistance. Do not demand antibiotics for viral illnesses. Complete the full course even if you feel better. Never buy antibiotics from shops without a prescription. Common antibiotics we prescribe: amoxicillin (take with food), azithromycin (3-5 day course), ciprofloxacin (not for children or pregnant women), doxycycline (avoid in pregnancy and children under 8), metronidazole (no alcohol during and 3 days after). Side effects: diarrhea, nausea, rash, yeast infection.

Call to Action: Do you have a bacterial infection? Get the right antibiotic by prescription. Call +256701364362.

Diabetes Medications

Oral medications: metformin (side effects: diarrhea, nausea), glibenclamide (risk of low blood sugar), glimepiride. Insulins: rapid-acting (aspart), short-acting (regular), intermediate-acting (NPH), long-acting (glargine). We teach insulin injection technique: rotate sites, use new needle each time, store insulin in refrigerator, do not use expired insulin. Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar below 70 mg/dL) – treat with 15g fast-acting sugar (juice, soda, honey), recheck in 15 minutes.

Call to Action: Need diabetes medications or insulin? Michoes Pharmacy has them. Call +256701364362.

Hypertension Medications

Take daily even when you feel fine. Amlodipine (ankle swelling, flushing), lisinopril (dry cough – if cough, we switch to losartan), losartan (no cough), hydrochlorothiazide (increases urination – take in morning), atenolol (slows heart rate). Most patients need two or more medications. Target blood pressure below 130/80. Do not stop suddenly – rebound hypertension can cause stroke.

Call to Action: Refill your blood pressure medication at Michoes Pharmacy. We check your BP for free. Call +256701364362.

Asthma Inhalers

Reliever inhaler (salbutamol – blue) – opens airways quickly for acute symptoms. Controller inhaler (beclomethasone, budesonide – brown) – reduces inflammation, use daily even when well. Use a spacer device for better delivery. Rinse mouth after steroid inhaler to prevent thrush. If you need your reliever more than twice a week, your asthma is uncontrolled – see a doctor.

Call to Action: Have asthma? Bring your inhaler to Michoes Pharmacy. We check your technique for free. Call +256701364362.

Pain Management

Mild pain: paracetamol – safe for all ages, pregnancy. Mild to moderate: ibuprofen – take with food, not for kidney disease or stomach ulcers. Moderate: diclofenac – stronger, similar precautions. Moderate to severe: tramadol – controlled drug, risk of dependence. Severe: morphine – only for hospital use. We do not prescribe opioids for chronic non-cancer pain.

Call to Action: In pain? Let us help you choose the safest, most effective painkiller. Call +256701364362.

Family Planning

Combined pills (Microgynon) – daily for 21 days then 7-day break. Progestin-only pills (Microlut) – safe while breastfeeding. Emergency contraception (Postinor-2) – within 72-120 hours of unprotected sex. Depo-Provera injection – every 12 weeks. Implant (Nexplanon) – lasts 3-5 years. IUD – lasts 5-10 years. Condoms – also prevent STIs.

Call to Action: Need contraceptives? Visit Michoes Pharmacy. Confidential. Call +256701364362.

Medication Safety

Jonathan screens every prescription for drug-drug interactions, drug-disease interactions, drug-allergy interactions, duplication, wrong dose, wrong duration. Bring all your medications – including herbs and traditional medicines – to every pharmacy visit. Never crush or split pills unless we tell you. Keep medications away from children. Check expiration dates. Return expired medications to us.

Call to Action: Worried about medication safety? Bring all your pills to Michoes Pharmacy for review. Call +256701364362.

Vaccines Available

Tetanus (every 10 years), hepatitis B (3 doses), HPV (girls 9-14 years, 2 doses – prevents cervical cancer), typhoid (single injection or 3 oral capsules), yellow fever (single dose – we are a designated centre), rabies (3 doses after animal bite), meningitis (for Hajj), pneumonia (for adults over 65), influenza (annual flu shot), COVID-19 (boosters), rotavirus (oral for infants), cholera (oral, 2 doses).

Call to Action: Need a vaccine? Visit Michoes Pharmacy. Call +256701364362.

Traditional Medicines Warning

Many herbal medicines contain hidden drugs (steroids, NSAIDs, antibiotics) or heavy metals causing kidney failure, liver damage, addiction. If you use herbs, tell us. Do not stop prescribed medications to take herbs. There is no herbal cure for diabetes, hypertension, or HIV – these require lifelong medical treatment.

Call to Action: Taking herbal medicines? Bring them for safety review. Call +256701364362.
