Achieng’s story – Safe delivery against the odds
Achieng, a 24-year-old mother from a village outside Kanyum, arrived at Michoes in labour. She had walked 5 kilometres. Her labour was prolonged – the baby was not descending. Our midwives identified obstructed labour and called Dr. Atai. Within 30 minutes, Achieng was in the operating theatre for an emergency caesarean section. Both mother and baby survived. Today, Achieng’s baby is healthy, and she is an advocate for facility delivery in her village.
James’s story – Returning to work after a fracture
James, a 45-year-old farmer, fell from a mango tree and broke his leg. He was brought to Michoes by boda boda. X-ray showed a complex tibial fracture. Dr. Emusugut performed open reduction and internal fixation (plates and screws). James spent 10 days in our orthopaedic unit, with daily physiotherapy. He was discharged on crutches. Four months later, he walked without a limp. Six months later, he returned to farming.
Little Grace – From severe malnutrition to healthy toddler
Grace, age 18 months, was brought to Michoes by her grandmother. She was listless, with swollen feet and thinning hair – signs of severe acute malnutrition. Our paediatric team admitted her, started therapeutic feeding (ready-to-use therapeutic food), treated her underlying infections, and educated the grandmother on nutrition. Within 4 weeks, Grace gained weight and became active. She continues to attend our well-child clinic.
Peter – Managing diabetes well
Peter, age 60, was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at Michoes. He had symptoms for years but never knew the cause. Our medical officer started him on metformin, gave dietary advice, and scheduled regular follow-up. Today, Peter’s blood sugar is controlled. He has lost weight, feels more energetic, and has avoided complications. He says Michoes gave him his life back.
