Common Orthopaedic Conditions We Treat in Kumi, Soroti & Surrounding Districts

Our orthopaedic team sees patients of all ages – from children with falls at school to elderly patients with arthritis and road accident victims on the Kumi–Soroti Highway.

1. Fractures (Broken Bones)

Falls from boda bodas, sports injuries, and road traffic accidents are common causes of fractures in Eastern Uganda. We treat:

  • Arm and wrist fractures (radius, ulna, humerus)
  • Leg fractures (tibia, fibula, femur)
  • Ankle fractures and foot fractures
  • Collarbone (clavicle) fractures
  • Hand and finger fractures

Treatment includes plaster casting, splinting, and when necessary, surgical fixation by Mr. Emusugut. Open fractures (bone visible through skin) are emergencies – come immediately.

2. Joint Pain & Arthritis

Chronic joint pain affects many farmers, teachers, and elderly residents in Kumi, Ngora, and Katakwi. We diagnose and manage:

  • Osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear arthritis of knees, hips, hands)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (autoimmune joint inflammation)
  • Post-traumatic arthritis (after old fractures)

Treatments include pain management, anti-inflammatory medications, joint injections (steroid or hyaluronic acid), and referral for joint replacement when needed.

3. Back Pain & Spine Problems

Lower back pain from heavy lifting, prolonged sitting, or farming injuries is very common. We evaluate and treat:

  • Muscle strain and ligament sprain
  • Herniated discs (slipped disc)
  • Sciatica (nerve pain down the leg)
  • Vertebral fractures from falls

We provide physiotherapy advice, pain relief, and when indicated, imaging (X-ray) to rule out serious causes.

4. Sports & Overuse Injuries

Football, running, and school sports cause injuries in young people across Soroti City and Bukedea. We treat:

  • Ankle sprains
  • Shin splints
  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
  • Rotator cuff injuries (shoulder pain)
  • Patellar tendinitis (jumper’s knee)

5. Paediatric Orthopaedics

Dr. Adoa Pious works closely with Mr. Emusugut for children’s bone conditions:

  • Fractures in growing bones
  • Bowing of legs (physiologic or rickets)
  • Flat feet
  • Limping child – causes including infection, trauma, or developmental issues

6. Orthopaedic Emergencies – Come to Michoes 24/7

The following require immediate care at our emergency department (open 24 hours):

  • Any fracture where bone is visible or the limb looks deformed
  • Joint dislocation (shoulder, knee, elbow out of place)
  • Severe back pain with loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Open wound with possible bone infection
  • Unable to move a limb after an accident

Emergency line: +256701364362. Call us on the way so we prepare the plaster room and X-ray.

Our Orthopaedic Team at Michoes Medical Centre

We have dedicated professionals working together for your bone and joint health.

Mr. Michael Emusugut – Senior Orthopaedic Consultant

Founder of Michoes Medical Centre, Mr. Emusugut is a pioneer in trauma care in Eastern Uganda. He completed advanced training in orthopaedic surgery at Makerere University and the University of Cape Town. He personally performs fracture fixations, joint aspirations, and complex wound management. Patients from Soroti, Kumi, and Mbale seek his expertise for second opinions and surgical care.

Dr. Nicholas Iyamitai – Head of Surgery & General Surgeon

Dr. Iyamitai collaborates with the orthopaedic team for severe trauma cases requiring both orthopaedic and soft tissue surgery. He is skilled in emergency laparotomies and wound reconstruction after open fractures.

Okello John Bosco – Senior Laboratory Technician

Before any orthopaedic surgery, Mr. Okello ensures blood tests (full blood count, infection markers, cross-matching) are done accurately and quickly. He manages our on-site lab with quality assurance protocols.

Jonathan A. – Lead Pharmacist

Our pharmacy dispenses pain medications (paracetamol, ibuprofen, stronger analgesics when needed), antibiotics for fracture-related infections, and calcium/vitamin D supplements for bone health. Jonathan counsels every patient on safe use.

Diagnostic Services for Orthopaedic Conditions

Accurate diagnosis is the first step to healing. At Michoes, we have:

  • Digital X-ray: Performed on-site. Images reviewed by our clinical team within hours. No need to travel to Soroti for plain X-rays.
  • Blood tests: For infection (CRP, ESR), rheumatoid factor, uric acid (to rule out gout), and calcium levels.
  • Joint aspiration: If your knee or shoulder is swollen and red, we can withdraw fluid and send it for analysis to rule out septic arthritis.

Call to Action: Walk in for an X-ray. No appointment needed. Open 24 hours. Call +256701364362 for pricing.

Non-Surgical Orthopaedic Treatments We Offer

Not every bone condition requires surgery. We emphasize conservative care first:

  • Rest, ice, compression, elevation (RICE) for acute injuries
  • Plaster casting and fiberglass splints for stable fractures
  • Physiotherapy guidance – we teach simple exercises you can do at home
  • Joint injections for arthritis flare-ups
  • Bracing and orthotics – we can advise where to obtain affordable knee braces, back supports, and shoe inserts
  • Pain management plans to reduce reliance on strong opioids

Surgical Orthopaedic Services

When surgery is necessary, Mr. Emusugut performs procedures in our minor theatre. For complex major surgeries (total joint replacement, spinal surgery), we refer patients to partner hospitals in Kampala or Mbale – but we manage all pre-operative and post-operative care right here in Kanyum.

Surgeries performed at Michoes include:

  • Closed reduction of fractures (manipulation without cutting)
  • Open reduction and internal fixation (metal plates and screws for unstable fractures)
  • Removal of metal implants after bone healing
  • Debridement of infected bone or open wounds
  • Excision of small bone tumours or ganglions

Post-Fracture Rehabilitation & Recovery

Healing doesn’t end when the cast comes off. We guide you through:

  • Range of motion exercises to prevent stiffness
  • Strength training to rebuild wasted muscles
  • Return to work and daily activities safely
  • Signs of complications (infection, non-union, re-fracture)

Our team will give you a written home exercise plan. For patients from Katakwi, Amuria, or Kaberamaido, we offer telephone follow-up to monitor progress.

Orthopaedic Care for Boda Boda & Road Traffic Accident Victims

Eastern Uganda’s roads – especially the Kumi–Soroti Highway – see many accidents. If you or a family member is injured in a crash, we are the closest 24/7 private facility with orthopaedic expertise. We:

  • Stabilise fractures immediately
  • Clean and dress open wounds to prevent infection
  • Provide tetanus vaccine and antibiotics as needed
  • Arrange X-ray and fracture reduction
  • Admit for observation if head injury or chest trauma is also present

Call to Action: After any boda boda accident with bone pain or inability to move a limb, go directly to Michoes Medical Centre emergency department. Call +256701364362 for ambulance advice.

Frequently Asked Questions About Orthopaedic Care in Kumi & Soroti

How much does a fracture consultation cost at Michoes?

Initial orthopaedic consultation is affordable – please call +256701364362 for current prices. We believe quality bone care should not bankrupt a family.

Do you perform knee replacement surgery in Kanyum?

We do not yet perform total knee replacements on site. However, Mr. Emusugut will evaluate you, arrange necessary X-rays and medical optimisation, and refer you to a trusted partner in Kampala with whom we share medical records. After surgery, you return to Michoes for suture removal and rehabilitation.

Can I get a plaster cast at night or on a Sunday?

Yes. Our emergency department is open 24/7. If you break a bone on a Saturday night or public holiday, come to Michoes. We have plaster materials always in stock.

Do you treat children with bow legs?

Yes. Dr. Adoa Pious and Mr. Emusugut work together. Many children have physiologic bow legs that straighten naturally, but we rule out rickets (vitamin D deficiency) and other causes with blood tests and X-rays.

How do I know if my back pain is serious?

Seek immediate care if back pain is accompanied by fever, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin, or sudden severe pain after a fall. These could indicate spinal fracture or cauda equina syndrome.

Do you offer payment plans or NHIS insurance?

We accept cash and mobile money. We do not yet accept national insurance, but we keep our fees transparent and reasonable. Ask our reception team about expected costs before any procedure.

Patient Stories (Anonymised)

“I fell from a boda boda on the Kumi–Soroti road. My wrist was badly bent. I was afraid they would cut my hand. Mr. Emusugut set the bone, put a cast, and after six weeks my hand was straight and working again. I am grateful to Michoes.” – John, farmer from Ngora.

“My grandmother had knee pain for years. She could not walk to the well. At Michoes, they gave her an injection and taught me exercises to help her. Now she walks with less pain.” – Grace, caregiver from Katakwi.
