Mental Health Conditions We Address

Depression

Persistent sadness, loss of interest, fatigue, changes in sleep or appetite, feelings of worthlessness, and sometimes thoughts of death or suicide. We provide counselling (talk therapy) and, when appropriate, antidepressant medications (fluoxetine, amitriptyline, sertraline). We monitor you closely.

Anxiety Disorders

Excessive worry, racing thoughts, restlessness, muscle tension, difficulty concentrating, panic attacks. We teach relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, and prescribe anti-anxiety medications (short-term) or SSRIs (long-term).

Stress and Burnout

Work, farming, family responsibilities, or financial pressure can lead to exhaustion, irritability, and physical symptoms (headaches, stomach problems). We help you identify stressors and build coping strategies.

Grief and Bereavement

Loss of a loved one, stillbirth, or miscarriage can cause intense sadness, numbness, and difficulty returning to daily life. We provide grief counselling and support groups (we can connect you).

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

After a traumatic event – boda boda accident, assault, war, domestic violence, or sudden death of a loved one. Symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance, hypervigilance. Counselling (trauma-focused therapy) is effective.

Sleep Disorders (Insomnia)

Trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early. We assess underlying causes (depression, anxiety, pain, caffeine, alcohol) and offer sleep hygiene advice, relaxation techniques, and short-term medication if needed. We avoid long-term sleeping pills due to dependence risk.

Relationship and Family Issues

Marital conflict, parenting stress, domestic violence, communication problems, infidelity, or separation. We offer couples counselling and family therapy (by appointment). We can also refer to social services for safety concerns.

Substance Use and Addiction

Alcohol, khat (miraa), cannabis, or other drugs causing health, financial, or relationship problems. We provide brief intervention, withdrawal management (detoxification support), counselling, and referral to rehabilitation programmes.

Suicidal Thoughts or Self-Harm

If you are thinking about ending your life or hurting yourself, do not wait. Come to Michoes immediately or call our emergency line. We will keep you safe, listen without judgment, and start treatment.

Our Approach to Mental Health Care

We follow a biopsychosocial model:

  • Biological: We rule out medical causes (thyroid disorder, anaemia, vitamin B12 deficiency, chronic infection, brain tumour) with appropriate tests. We prescribe psychiatric medications when indicated.
  • Psychological: We use evidence-based counselling techniques: cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), problem-solving therapy, motivational interviewing, and supportive listening.
  • Social: We assess your living situation, work, relationships, social support, and financial stressors. We connect you with community resources, religious support if you wish, or social services.

We do not force medication. We will discuss options and respect your preferences. Follow-up appointments are essential to track progress.

What to Expect at Your First Counselling Session

  1. You will meet one of our counsellors or doctors in a private room. No one else will be present unless you request a family member or translator.
  2. We will ask about what brought you here, your symptoms, how long they have lasted, and how they affect your daily life.
  3. We will ask about your medical history, medications, alcohol or drug use, and any past mental health treatment.
  4. We may ask permission to speak with a family member (if you agree) to get more information.
  5. We will discuss possible causes and offer a treatment plan: counselling alone, medication alone, or both.
  6. If you agree to follow-up, we will schedule your next session (usually 1-2 weeks later).
  7. For suicidal thoughts or severe depression, we will not send you home alone without a safety plan and follow-up within 24-48 hours.

When to Seek Emergency Mental Health Care at Michoes

Come immediately or call +256701364362 if you or someone you know:

  • Is talking about suicide or wanting to die.
  • Is searching for ways to kill themselves (online, buying pills, weapons).
  • Says they have no reason to live or are a burden to others.
  • Is giving away prized possessions or saying goodbye.
  • Has attempted suicide or self-harm (cutting, overdose).
  • Is hearing voices or seeing things that others do not (possible psychosis).
  • Is behaving bizarrely, aggressively, or dangerously (possible mania or substance intoxication).
  • Is severely agitated, not sleeping, and talking very fast.

Do not leave the person alone. Remove any means of self-harm (pills, knives, ropes, pesticides). Bring them to Michoes or call us. We are here 24/7.

Self-Help Tips for Mental Wellness

  • Talk to someone you trust – do not isolate yourself.
  • Stay active – walking 30 minutes daily improves mood.
  • Sleep regularly – aim for 7-8 hours.
  • Reduce alcohol and khat – both worsen anxiety, depression, and sleep problems over time.
  • Eat regular meals – low blood sugar can cause irritability and fatigue.
  • Pray, meditate, or practice deep breathing – 5 minutes of slow breathing (inhale 4 seconds, exhale 6 seconds) calms the nervous system.
  • Set small goals – do not try to fix everything at once.
  • Seek professional help early – do not wait until crisis.
