Malaria Prevention and Treatment Guide – Eastern Uganda

Malaria Prevention and Treatment Guide – Eastern Uganda

Malaria is the leading cause of illness and death in Eastern Uganda, including Kumi, Soroti, Bukedea, Ngora, and Katakwi districts. At Michoes Medical Centre in Kanyum, we provide rapid malaria testing, effective treatment, and prevention education. Our emergency department is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for severe malaria cases.

Recognizing Malaria Symptoms

Common symptoms include fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, weakness, vomiting, and diarrhea. In children, symptoms may include irritability, difficulty feeding, and rapid breathing. Severe malaria causes confusion, seizures, dark urine, and difficulty breathing. Seek immediate care if you or your child have these symptoms.

Call to Action: If you have fever with chills, come to Michoes Medical Centre immediately. We test and treat malaria 24/7. Call +256701364362.

Malaria Prevention for Families in Kumi, Soroti, and Bukedea

Prevention is better than treatment. Our team, led by Dr. Adoa Pious for children and Dr. Susan Atai for pregnant women, provides evidence-based prevention strategies:

Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs): Sleep under a treated net every night. We provide net distribution information and replacement nets at our pharmacy.

Indoor residual spraying (IRS): Support district spraying campaigns in Kumi, Soroti, and Bukedea.

Intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp): Pregnant women receive sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine at each antenatal visit after 13 weeks. Dr. Susan Atai provides this during antenatal care.

Seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC): For children under 5 during rainy seasons. Ask Dr. Adoa Pious about SMC at well-child visits.

Call to Action: Book antenatal care for IPTp. Call +256701364362. Book well-child visits for SMC. Call same number.

Malaria in Pregnancy

Malaria during pregnancy causes maternal anemia, low birth weight, preterm delivery, and stillbirth. Dr. Susan Atai provides IPTp, net distribution, and prompt treatment. If you are pregnant and have fever, seek care immediately.

Call to Action: Register for antenatal care at Michoes. Call +256701364362 or WhatsApp +256779784473.

Malaria in Children Under 5

Children under 5 are at highest risk of severe malaria and death. Dr. Adoa Pious recommends: sleep under treated net every night, seek testing for any fever, complete full treatment course, and bring child back if symptoms worsen. Vaccines do not prevent malaria; nets and prompt treatment save lives.

Call to Action: If your child has fever, bring them to Michoes for a malaria test. We see children 24 hours a day. Call +256701364362.

When to Return After Treatment

Return to Michoes immediately if you or your child have: fever returns after finishing treatment, difficulty breathing, unable to drink or breastfeed, repeated vomiting, seizures, confusion, or worsening weakness. These may indicate severe malaria or treatment failure.

Call to Action: For any worsening symptoms after malaria treatment, call +256701364362 or come to our emergency department.
