How to Prepare for Your Lab Test

  • Fasting blood tests (glucose, lipid profile, HbA1c): Do not eat or drink anything except water for 8-12 hours before. Take your regular medications unless instructed otherwise.
  • Non-fasting tests (FBC, LFTs, KFTs, HIV, hepatitis, malaria, typhoid): No preparation needed.
  • Urine tests: For clean-catch midstream urine: wash hands and genital area. Start urinating, then collect midstream in sterile container. For pregnancy test, first morning urine is best.
  • Stool tests: Collect sample in clean, dry container. Do not mix with urine or water. Bring within 2 hours if possible.
  • Blood sample: We use small needles. Drink water before to make veins easier to find. Tell us if you feel dizzy or faint.
