Complete Guide to Diabetes Care & Management

Complete Guide to Diabetes Care & Management

Diabetes affects over 537 million adults worldwide, including approximately 5% of Kenya’s adult population. At Michoe’s Medical Centre, we provide comprehensive, evidence-based diabetes care from diagnosis through long-term management. This guide covers everything you need to know about preventing, monitoring, and thriving with diabetes.

Understanding Diabetes Types

Type 1 Diabetes

Autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells leads to absolute insulin deficiency. Accounts for 5-10% of cases, typically diagnosed in children and young adults. Requires lifelong insulin therapy. Symptoms include rapid weight loss, excessive thirst, frequent urination, and diabetic ketoacidosis risk.

Type 2 Diabetes

Accounts for 90-95% of cases. Characterized by insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency. Strongly associated with obesity, physical inactivity, family history, and age over 45. Often asymptomatic initially; diagnosed through routine screening.

Gestational Diabetes

Develops during pregnancy (2-10% of pregnancies). Increases risk of future type 2 diabetes for mother and child. Managed through diet, exercise, and sometimes insulin. Resolves after delivery but requires long-term follow-up.

Prediabetes

Blood glucose levels above normal but below diabetes threshold. Reversible with lifestyle intervention. Affects 1 in 3 Kenyan adults. Critical window for prevention.
